Getting Started with Trezor
Welcome to Trezor, the world's most trusted hardware wallet. Trezor provides ultimate security for your cryptocurrencies by keeping your private keys offline, away from potential online threats. This guide will walk you through the complete setup process and help you understand how to safely manage your digital assets.
Setting up your Trezor device is straightforward and takes just a few minutes. The device comes with everything you need to get started, including a USB cable for connection and recovery seed cards for backing up your wallet. Before you begin, make sure you're in a private location and have about 15-20 minutes to complete the setup process without interruptions.
Why Choose Trezor?
Ultimate Security
Your private keys never leave the device. All transactions are signed offline, protecting you from keyloggers, phishing attacks, and malware. The device is PIN-protected and features advanced encryption.
Open Source
Trezor's firmware and software are completely open source, meaning security researchers worldwide can audit the code. This transparency ensures there are no hidden vulnerabilities or backdoors.
Easy to Use
Despite its advanced security features, Trezor is designed to be user-friendly. The intuitive interface guides you through every step, from setup to managing transactions. No technical expertise required.
Multi-Currency Support
Store and manage thousands of cryptocurrencies and tokens. Trezor supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and many more, all in one secure device. Add new assets anytime without compromise.
Step-by-Step Setup Guide
Step 1: Unbox Your Trezor
Carefully unbox your Trezor device and verify that the packaging is intact and hasn't been tampered with. Inside the box, you should find your Trezor device, a USB cable, recovery seed cards, a user manual, and stickers. Check that all holographic seals are present and unbroken.
Never use a device if the packaging appears to have been opened or tampered with. In such cases, contact Trezor support immediately and request a replacement device.
Step 2: Connect to Your Computer
Click the green "Connect" button above or visit trezor.io/start to begin. Plug your Trezor device into your computer using the provided USB cable. The device will power on automatically and display a welcome message.
Make sure you're on the official Trezor website (check the URL carefully). The setup wizard will guide you through installing Trezor Bridge, a communication tool between your device and browser. This is necessary for the device to work properly.
Step 3: Install Firmware
If this is a new device, you'll need to install the latest firmware. The setup wizard will automatically detect this and prompt you to install. Simply follow the on-screen instructions and confirm the installation on your Trezor device.
Firmware installation may take a few minutes. Do not disconnect your device during this process. The screen will show a progress bar, and the device will restart automatically when complete.
Step 4: Create Your PIN
Set up a strong PIN to protect your device from unauthorized access. The PIN entry uses a unique blind matrix system - the numbers are displayed on your Trezor screen, but you enter them using the blank grid on your computer. This prevents keyloggers from capturing your PIN.
Choose a PIN between 4 and 9 digits. Make it memorable but not obvious (avoid 1234, birth dates, etc.). You'll need to enter this PIN each time you use your Trezor device.
Step 5: Write Down Your Recovery Seed
This is the most critical step. Your Trezor will display 12 or 24 words (recovery seed) on its screen. Write these words down on the recovery card provided, in the exact order shown. This seed is the master backup of your wallet - anyone with access to it can recover your funds.
Never take a photo of your seed or store it digitally. Never share it with anyone. Keep it in a secure, physical location such as a safe. Consider making multiple copies and storing them in different secure locations.
After writing down all words, you'll be asked to verify them by selecting specific words from your seed in the correct order. This ensures you've written them down correctly.
Step 6: Name Your Device
Give your Trezor a name to easily identify it if you have multiple devices. This name is stored only on the device and doesn't affect your security.
Congratulations! Your Trezor is now set up and ready to use. You can start receiving and sending cryptocurrencies immediately.
Security Best Practices
- Always verify addresses on the device screen.
Before confirming any transaction, check that the recipient address shown on your Trezor screen matches the address you intend to send to. This protects against malware that might change addresses in your browser.
- Keep your recovery seed offline and secure.
Store your recovery seed in a fireproof safe or safety deposit box. Consider using a metal backup for extra durability. Never enter your seed on any computer or phone.
- Use a strong PIN and enable passphrase protection.
For additional security, consider enabling passphrase protection (also called the "25th word"). This adds an extra layer of security that protects against physical theft of your device.
- Keep your firmware up to date.
Regularly check for firmware updates in Trezor Suite. Updates include security improvements and new features. The update process is safe and your funds remain secure during updates.
- Beware of phishing attempts.
Always double-check URLs before entering any information. Trezor will never ask for your recovery seed via email or support tickets. When in doubt, visit trezor.io directly by typing the URL.
